Evan Pugh, president of the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania, certified that C. Alfred Smith received a graduate degree, Master of Scientific and Practical Agriculture, in 1863. C. Alfred Smith added a note that this certification conferred the first advanced degree awarded at Pennsylvania State College.
